One Step at a Time: looking back.

When you care about people you can do so much more than you ever expected.

Journal from May 2022: 6 days left to go in this challenge. As I sit here thinking of how I will tackle these last 20km to finish my target of 50k, a lesson comes to my mind from way back in my childhood. It was for a group of us kids during Sunday school. I may not totally remember the story line correctly, but this is what I recall as it had a profound effect on my life.
It was about heaven and Hell. Hahaha Everyone in heaven and everyone in hell were seated at a huge table with a feast of food set before them. The people in hell couldn’t eat because their arms couldn’t bend at the elbow due to being cast in iron braces….I think that’s how the story went. 😄
In heaven they were doing just fine even though they were wearing the cast iron braces on their arms. They had discovered they could feed each other. No one was going hungry because they cared about each other and helped each other get the food to their mouths and someone would feed them as well. I guess Hell was when no one fed each other… they went hungry.

If everyone could take care of each other, they too could be cared for and no one would have to go hungry. Very wishful thinking.

So what are we waiting for in life? This is what life should be here on Earth where we care about each other and we do our best to provide and care for each other.

So with everyone’s great support and encouragement I was able to get the May 50k done and even did some walking with my friend who is a MS warrior. I also got to reconnect with my good friend who had been diagnosed with MS years ago

.The best part of this May 50k marathon was getting to the finish line and what it represented to me and to people who are suffering from multiple sclerosis. I have learned a great deal more about this disease and its effects on people’s daily life. It is a life changing disease that takes its toll on every aspect of life. I have also learned that all people living with multiple sclerosis are warriors because every day they fight to stay strong; it is not an easy road. Pain management, mobility, a sense of identity are some of the many challenges people living with MS face every day. Imagine your passion in life is to be a runner or a visual artist but your abilities are being sucked away leaving a fading memory of what you wanted to do in life. Don’t tell me it’s a disease that is non life threatening because this is certainly not the case. I will do this run again next year! I hope more people will join me in this marathon or maybe another one of their choice. It is very rewarding in many ways.
